Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the 100th anniversary of Kadva Patidar Samaj in Gujarat via video conferencing. (PTI Photo) From being one of the most backward regions of the country where officials used to be transferred for “punishment posting”, Kutch district has become one of the fastest growing districts in the country, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he virtually addressed an event of the Akhil Bharatiya Kutch Kadva Patidar Samaj at Nakhatrana.
Remembering the contributions made by the community during the 2001 Kutch earthquake, Modi said, “There was a time when Kutch was one of the most backward regions of the country. Water scarcity, food shortage, animal deaths and migration…this was the identity of Kutch. If an official was transferred to Kutch, then it used to be considered as punishment posting or Kala-Paani.”
“But in the past several years, we have changed the situation of Kutch. Together, we worked to eliminate water shortage, made it a tourist destination. Today, I feel proud to see that Kutch is one of the fastest growing districts of the country. The connectivity of Kutch is improving. Big industries are coming. In a place where agriculture was difficult to think of, today agricultural exports are happening from the region,” he added.
Pointing out the atrocities committed by foreign invaders on India’s society for hundreds of years, the Prime Minister highlighted that the ancestors of the land did not allow their identity to be erased and their faith to be fragmented. “We are seeing the effect of sacrifices of centuries ago in the current generation of this successful society”, the Prime Minister said as he mentioned that the Kutch Kadwa Patidar community are moving forward with their labour and ability in sectors such as timber, plywood, hardware, marble and building materials, among others.
“The journey of any nation is reflected in the journey of its society”, he said, underlining the 100-year-old history of the Patidar Samaj and 100 years of the Akhil Bharatiya Kutch Kadva Patidar Samaj. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also present at the event.
