Manek Khurshid Kanga was arrested this April and lodged in Vadodara Central Jail
Key accused in a multi-crore scam who has been facing trial since his arrest in April this year,Manek Khurshid Kanga died of cardiac arrest at Sir Sayajirao General Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
Mumbai-based Kanga (75),who was the managing director of Biotor India Limited,was arrested at the Mumbai airport in April this year by the Gujarat Police and booked under under IPC Sections 420 and 409. He was lodged at Vadodara Central Jail.
Kanga was being treated by jail doctors and also at the Sir Sayajirao General Hospital since he was brought here on May 13, said Vadodara Central Jail Superintendent Arun Vyas,
He added: On Wednesday,he complained of chest pain. We took him to SSG Hospital and back to the jail. On Thursday he apparently had a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the SSG Hospital where he died at 4.30 pm. Vyas said a detailed report will be sent to the National Human Rights Commission as well as part of the formalities.
In April this year,Dhairyapal Sinh Maharaul,the manager of Biotor,approached the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) and filed a cheating complaint against four top officials of his company,formerly known as Jayesh Oil Company.
The firm has has two units in Vadodara.
It was alleged they had embezzled Rs 221.47 crore over the past three years by providing false bills,making audit changes and issuing bogus permits to allegedly supply seeds to the bankrupt oil seed manufacturing units.
After investigations,the DCB named Manek Kanga,Zubin Battiwala,Amit Gohil and Subhash Shah as key accused.
DCB sleuths have already arrested assistant manager Amit Gohil from Ahmedabad and financial manager Subhash Shah from Makarpura.
