Una police in Junagadh district on Wednesday arrested a man for allegedly raping a married woman in his neighbourhood while her husband was away at work two days ago.
Ramesh Bambhaniya,a resident of Ramnagar area,is a casual labourer and a father of two. He had been on the run since a 26-year-old married woman lodged a complaint against him Sunday evening, police said.
We are awaiting reports of the victims medical examination. The accused will be taken for medical tests later this evening, Lakhubha Dhandhal,sub-inspector and the cases investigating officer (IO),said.
In her complaint, the victim,a mother of two, alleged that Bambhaniya forced himself on her after tricking her to let him enter her house on Saturday night. The accused called up the womans mobile number at around 1 am and requested her to let him hide in her house as a police team was behind him as he was involved in a theft case.
Later on,however, the woman realised that the theft story was false. Bambhaniya overpowered and raped her. Before running away, the assailant threatened her not to reveal the incident or he would kill her and her children. Being neighbours, the victim and accused knew each other, police said.
The victims husband works a casual labourer in Bhavnagar. The woman lives in Una with her children. We have summoned the victims husband for recording his statement, the IO said.
Una police have booked Bambhaniya for rape, criminal intimidation and house-trespass.
