The state Information technology (IT) and biotechnology (BT) sectors attracted Rs 14,445 crore worth of investment proposals being pledged by Indian and foreign firms on the second day of the VGGIS, which would bring in employment generation for 2,42,216 people.
Officials revealed that the state Department of Science & Technology (DST) received 69 investment intentions of Rs 11, 215 crore with the employment generation figure pegged at 2.35 lakh in the IT sector.
These were signed at the ‘Innovation: The torchbearer of the 21st Century’ seminar as part of the summit held on Monday, where the biotechnology sphere saw a total of 60 investment intentions and 6 strategic partnerships, with a total investment commitment of Rs 3,230 crore and likely employment opportunities for around 7,216 people.
While 41 MoU’s are in the manufacturing sector and 20 in agriculture, around 6 new ventures by state-based biotech industries have been indicated. Among these, three new technologies, including genomics for healthcare application, bio-refinery for developing bio-fuel from waste, a new vaccine platform, tumour diagnostic and therapeutics have been identified.
Key biotechnology companies who signed MoUs at the seminar include CVC infrastructure, Anil Bioplus, Pangenomics, Nanotech Diagnostics & Therapeutics, Hubtown Ltd, Swati Spentose Pvt Ltd , Hester Biosciences, Intervein Labs among others.
Despite the MoU haul in IT-BT sector, a senior representative of a city-based IT firm revealed, “ We had already signed an MoU at a previous Vibrant Summit promising 5,000 jobs with an investment of Rs 2,000 crore, but that project is yet to take off. However, GIL wrote to us in December about the status of that MoU and we replied in the affirmative although we had not done much in the project and have also gone for an MoU this time. The MoU certificate given to us by the state government also just mentions that our firm has shown intention of investment and are interested in signing an MoU.”
At the event, Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel launched the Gujarat State Innovation Council portal and a new Centre on IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) at the Gandhinagar National Law University (GNLU) to facilitate process of invention and innovation in the state.
Innovation in education, water, life sciences, next generation, materials, health, agriculture and tourism, IPR and funding innovation was deliberated by eminent speakers, including Y S Chowdhary, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Padmashri recipient Bala Balachandran, Rajgopal Srinivas, Head Bio-IT, TCS, Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship & Immigration, Canada and Adam Fenech, Nobel laureate from Canada.
