AHMEDABAD: B N Dutta,who was earlier director of Income Tax (Investigation) here,has taken over as the new director-general of Income Tax (Investigation) in Ahmedabad from January 27.
Dutta belongs to the 1977 batch of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and was awarded the finance minister’s gold medal for standing first in the training programme of his batch. Besides,he was also given the R S Chadha Memorial gold medal for the best probationary officer. He was also a member of the expert group deputed to rewrite the income tax law in 2005.

GMDC posts profit of Rs 189.38 cr
Ahmedabad: THE Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has posted a PAT (profit after tax) of Rs 189.38 crore in the financial year ending December 31,2009. This is 14 per cent more than the 165.71 crore PAT for the previous year.
Market capitalisation up to Dec 31,2009 in the current financial year is Rs 5,150 crore against Rs 1,351 crore for the corresponding period last year – almost four times higher compared to last year. GMDC is engaged in the development and extraction of major mineral resources in Gujarat.

Bypoll for Rajya Sabha seat in Gujarat on Feb 25
Ahmedabad: THE Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for holding by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant following the death of sitting BJP MP Suryakant Acharya.
By-election will be conducted on February 25 while notification for the poll will be issued on February 8 and last date for filing the nomination is February 15,officials said.
The result will also be declared on the same day of voting on February 25,they said.
Acharya,a seasoned BJP leader,died due to age related complications on December 21 whose six year term in the upper house of the Parliament is to end in August 2011.

NID to organise India’s first design fest for students
AHMEDABAD: THE National Institute of Design will host India’s first design fest for students this year. The institute’s cultural fest,RGB will follow the tech and business fests of the IITs and IIMs. There were attempts to make the last RGB,in 2007,a design fest,“but it did not really work out”,said Kabini,the organiser of RGB 2010 and vice-president of the Student Activity Council.
The events lined-up for this year’s RGB include designing postcards after a walk through the Walled City,designing a product to address a specific social problem,redesigning a hazardous object into a non-hazardous one,and so on.
About 25 colleges from across India have been invited for the fest between February 12 and 14. One of the main but non-competitive events — Showoff — will be an exhibition of a product that each college will be asked to bring along. The products will represent the main activities of each college.
Workshops like puppetry and using paper as a sculpturing material — will be included. The only non-design event will be a rock concert in the evening by the Mumbai-based band Para Vayu.
