Parents of a Class VII student of St Xavier’s School lodged a complaint against a teacher for forcing their daughter to eat neem leaves for lunch on Wednesday. The girl was punished for not getting food according to the menu given by the school. The Naroda police said Prachi Deesa had brought roti and vegetables for lunch. The teacher,Mamta,reportedly saw her tiffin box and threw away the food. As punishment,she plucked neem leaves from the school garden and forced Deesa to eat them.
The girl’s parents lodged a complaint of harassment against Mamta. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. In the case of Janambanu Momin,a 10-year-old student of Ashmi School,who was beaten up for not finishing her homework,the police said the principal has stopped coming to the school to avoid interrogation. Investigating Officer,Head Constable Shiraj Kajibhai said,“The principal has stopped coming to the school and even the teacher is not coming.” Momin is recovering at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.

55 per cent voting in Chotila bypoll
RAJKOT: Nearly 55 per cent polling was registered at the by-elections for the Chotila Assembly seat on Wednesday. Except for a couple of complaints of breach of the Model Code of Conduct,the election was peaceful.
Polling began at 7 am with a lukewarm response,but the turnout improved after 10 am.
According to preliminary reports,the interior areas have registered heavy voting as compared to town areas like Chotila,Than and Sayla. The constituency has two talukas,Chotila and Sayla. At 4 pm,the voter turnout in the Koli-dominated constituency was 40 per cent,but the voting trend has suggested a likely 55 per cent turnout. .
The bypoll was necessitated due to the sudden demise of Chotila MLA Vashram Khorani. BJP candidate Bharat Vashram cast his vote from his native village of Lakhlaka. .
The other two main candidates,Nirantben Dhariya (Congress) and Shamji Chauhan (supported by the Shiv Sena) did not cast their ballot as they belong to other constituencies. Dhariya belongs to Chori village in Sayla taluka,which is a part of the nearby Jasdan constituency..
The district administration had to replace electronic voting machines at Sanosara and Chobari villages following complaints of malfunctioning.

National radiology meet from Jan 23 .
The Indian Radiological and Imaging Association’s 63rd National Conference on Radiology will be held in Ahmedabad from January 23. Organising Chairman Dr Harshad Shah said the city is hosting the conference after 29 years. More than 10,000 experts from other states,China,the UK and the US are expected to participate in this event. Discussions on the wrong use of Sonography for sex determination and on the changing phases of radiology will be held at the event. — ENS

Man robbed of house,valuables
A man had lodged a police complaint on Wednesday alleging 15 men robbed him of his house and valuables. The complainant Ashok Goswami of Swastik Bungalows,Chandkheda,said the men claimed the house belonged to them.
According to the police,the victim was alone at home on Tuesday morning when the accused,Chandu Sadhu,Vasu Sadhu and others entered his house. Chandu allegedly put a gun on Goswami’s head while another accused had put a sword on his neck. He allegedly told Goswami to vacate the house immediately as it belonged to him.
Police said Chandu then took cash of Rs 3,000 and a mobile phone from the victim’s pocket and the others took away the valuables from his house and put it in a truck they had brought.
They tied Goswami up and took him in a private car to an unidentified place and took his signature on a stamp paper in front of a notary — Darjibhai.

The police have registered a case of robbery against Chandu Sadhu,Vasu Sadhu,Jayvir Yadav,Sanjeev Yadav,Rajat Yadav and Vinod. Further investigations are on.

Swine flu claims 16th victim in Vadodara
Vadodara: The 16th swine flu death was reported from the city on Wednesday. Hitendra Parmar (49) succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus late on Tuesday night,before the medical reports could confirm him as a positive case.The victim,a resident of the Harni area,worked as an assistant manager with a city-based bank.

I-T Dept raids three firms
SURAT: The Income Tax Department carried out a raid at two builder groups and a textile trading company in Surat.
The drive started from Tuesday and continued till Wednesday at the builder firms,while the drive is still on in the textile firm. The raid led to the recovery of unaccounted money to the tune of Rs 16.70 crore.
All premises including house,office,godowns,and sister concerns totalling eight premises of the two builders and the textile trading firm were covered under the drive.
An official said on condition of anonymity that they were expecting a huge amount from the textile firm.
The builders had undertaken several constructions in the posh areas of the city. All the flats had been sold off. At other sites,projects are under construction.
The average cost of a single flat in the newly finished projects is upward of a crore,said the official. —

Sci-Fi film fest to start from Jan 24
British science-fiction movie directors will pay a two-day visit to Ahmedabad and conduct workshops on making films for the genre,
coupled with a series of film screenings.
The Sci-Fi London in India Festival,from January 24- January 25,is being organised by the British Council,the National Institute of Design (NID) and the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.The workshops and film screenings will be held at both the Darpana and NID premises,and is open for the public.

The directors who are coming are founder-director of the London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film Louis Savy,Darren Rapier – who has written a number of films for BBC and media entrepreneur Jobeda Ali,one of the 20 women from across the world to be selected as a “Rising Talent” by the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society. The workshop would be a session where participants are taught how to pick out science-fiction film plots from established science journals like New Scientist,Nature and Scientific American.
