As the state braces up for the elections of municipalities, district and taluka panchayats today, police have made extra security arrangements at polling booths in seven districts in central Gujarat. Security has been increased in areas where members of Patidar community had put up banners threatening political leaders to “enter at your own risk.”
Vadodara rural police have identified a total of 216 “extra sensitive” and 200 “sensitive” booths based on security parameters across Vadodara that go to the polls. Vadodara rural Superintendent of Police Sharad Singhal said, “Areas where banners were put up exhorting political leaders to stay away from campaigning have been counted as extra sensitive and an armed guard will be deployed on each of those booths.”
Most of these booths have been identified in areas such as Por, Varnama, Padra and Savli, he said, while briefing the media on law and order arrangement for the Sunday elections.
Singhal said that a company of the SRPF from Maharashtra has been sought apart from a company of the Central Reserve Police Force in the district to ensure that the force is deployed as per the guidelines provided by the State Election Commission.
The Vadodara range IG office covers seven districts in central Gujarat, including Vadodara rural, Bharuch, Narmada, Chhota Udepur, the Panchmahals, Mahisagar and Dahod.
Across seven districts, around 25,000 police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order during the polls, including 59 police inspectors, 261 police sub-inspectors, 9,533 police constables, 11,629 home guards, and 2,799 gram rakshak dal personnel.
This is apart from a CRPF, six Maharashtra SRP, 9 Gujarat SRP, four BSF companies.
