(Representative image)Hours after an 84-year-old senior citizen was allegedly robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 2 lakh and assaulted, when she was alone at his house, in a residential society in Anand district’s Vallabh Vidyanagar, police arrested the accused on Tuesday.
The incident took place on the intervening night of Monday when the victim, Mahendrakaur Gurdeepsingh Reshi, was alone at her home as her son and daughter-in-law were travelling abroad.
Police said that the accused, Vipul Vasava, a resident of the slum area near Vidyanagar water tank and a native of Karjan in Vadodara district, had entered the house on the pretext of meeting his sister and brother-in-law, who worked with the Reshis and lived in the outhouse of their home.
From there, Vasava allegedly climbed up to the first floor and entered the victim’s bedroom, punching her in the face before assaulting her with a knife.
Providing details of the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) JN Panchal said that the accused escaped with ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 50,000 cash from a safe in the room.
Panchal said, “Within hours of the crime, we tracked down the accused with the help of the CCTV video and nabbed him. Whatever was stolen has been recovered”.
The local court in Anand remanded the accused to two days in custody of the Vidyanagar Police Station after the police informed the court that an investigation was needed to ascertain if Vasava was helped by his sister and the brother-in-law, who work for the Reshis.
On Tuesday, the police officials also reconstructed the crime scene and brought Vasava to the incident spot as he displayed how he had climbed the wall and entered into the bedroom of the victim through the balcony door.
