GSRTC hikes fares by 25% in first surge in around 10 years
The state-run entity has hiked the fares of local and express buses by 25 per cent, while the fares of non-air-conditioned sleeper buses have been hiked by 24 per cent. This is the first price surge by the GSRTC in around 10 years. The last hike was in 2014.

The loss-making Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) on Monday said it has increased the bus fares by 25 per cent.
The state-run entity has hiked the fares of local and express buses by 25 per cent, while the fares of non-air-conditioned sleeper buses have been hiked by 24 per cent. This is the first price surge by the GSRTC in around 10 years. The last hike was in 2014.
After the increase, the per kilometre fares stand at 80 paise for local buses, 85 paise for express buses and 77 paise for non-AC sleeper buses. In a release, GSRTC claimed that even after the hike, the fares in Gujarat are much lower compared to Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan.
The state transport service also claimed that about 10 lakh passengers use the local buses daily where the average distance travelled is about 48 kilometres. This resultant fare increase will not be more than Rs 6 for such travellers, it added.
GSRTC also plans to add 8,841 new employees, as per the statement. This would include 2,784 drivers and 2,034 conductors, 2,420 mechanics, among others.
Meanwhile, Congress has criticised the surge, saying the increase in fares will adversely affect travellers and commuters.
