The Gujarat government on Wednesday said it will spend Rs 70 crore in reconstructing the Bahuchar Mata temple at Becharaji in Mehsana district.

“It was earlier decided to increase the height of the temple from 59 to 71 feet. After conducting soil bearing capacity tests, it has been decided to increase the height to 86.1 feet,” Rushikesh Patel, Cabinet Minister and spokesperson for the government said after the Cabinet meeting.

When asked how are the pilgrims going to benefit, Patel said, “We are renovating the entire temple. It will have a number of facilities for the pilgrims… The way we developed the Ambaji temple, we will be hiring architects to develop it.”

The temple, located about 110 km from Ahmedabad, was built around 1780s during the rule of Manaji Rao Gaekwad. The deity is of Bahuchar Mata riding a rooster. The Goddess is also believed to be a principal deity of transvestite and eunuchs.
