Opposing the bail petition of suspended and jailed IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in connection with the case registered with Ghatlodia Police Station, state government counsel, during the proceeding in Ahmedabad district rural court, alleged that Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia was also involved in the case.
Bhatt has been arrested for having allegedly forced a police constable KD Panth to sign an affidavit which corroborates the formers claim that he attended a meeting called by Chief Minister Narendra Modi on February 27,2002 following the Godhra train carnage. In the said meeting,Modi allegedly gave instructions to the top bureaucrats to let Hindus vent their anger against Muslims following Godhra carnage.
Arguing on behalf of the state government,Special Public Prosecutor SV Raju said that Modhwadia had called the lawyer who had allegedly prepared the said affidavit of Panth a number of times after midnight of June 16 and also sent him SMSs early next morning,he said.
Raju argued that this had been corroborated with the phone call records, statements of the lawyer, and the notary. What made a senior Congress leader Modhwadia talk to Panth at such an odd hour,Raju asked, adding that this proved that Panth was reluctant to sign the affidavit which was fabricated and false.
Raju said that the hobnobbing of Bhatt with the Opposition party Congress clearly shows he filed an affidavit containing false contents in the Supreme Court with a purpose to arraign Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in an offence of murder. He added that Bhatt was a habitual offender and had criminal antecedents. To support his claims he highlighted other criminal cases against him in various courts.
The state government further accused Bhatt of tampering with evidence. Raju said Bhatt had twisted the office order of giving reward to Panth for his duty during the riots period.
The hearing is likely to continue on Tuesday.
