The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) now has five new offices for better monitoring of the pollution affected areas in the state. These include three in Bharuch, including one for the critically polluted Ankleshwar taluka following the trifurcation of the district. Additionally, four vigilance offices have also been set up in Rajkot,Gandhinagar,Surat and Vadodara.
Regional Officer M S Shukla said the three divisions will be looked after by two offices catering to the industries on either side of the Narmada.
The division was created here so that more areas could be covered in a short span during the monitoring process, said Shukla.
The Bharuch office will cover Bharuch,Dahej (including the Special Economic Zone),and Vagra, which will also include Vilayat.
The Ankleshwar office will cover Panoli,Ankleshwar,Valiya and Jhagadia.
GPCB Member Secretary R G Shah said the new offices will be set up in Himmatnagar,Porbandar and Surendranagar. But Vapi, which is the second-most critically polluted taluka in Gujarat, will continue to have one office in the Vapi Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).
Besides, four additional vigilance squads comprising three members have been set up by GPCB,which will have offices in Gandhinagar,Vadodara,Surat and Bharuch.
Senior GPCB officials said the new squad will exclusively collect samples and monitor the units through surprise visits.
It was recently in March 2010,that the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) named Ankleshwar and Vapi as critically polluted talukas, while Vadodara and Ahmedabad feature on the list of alarmingly polluted sites.
