(Express Photo/Avinash Nair) Former Gujarat chief minister Suresh Mehta has said that he will launch a platform called ‘Jan Abhiyan, Badale Gujarat’ Thursday to create awareness among the electorate about the politics of inflation, unemployment, and hate, among others. The announcement was made at a press conference in Ahmedabad Wednesday.
“At the outset, I must inform you that this is not an attempt at formation of a new political outfit or to fight elections. I feel the people of the state are the final authority and it is very important that they are aware of the present state of affairs in their own state. A voter can exercise his judgment (during elections) only when there is no fear or lure of money,” said Mehta, who headed a BJP government in the state from 1995-1996. The veteran leader quit the saffron party in 2007.
Mehta said a large number of children in Gujarat are “malnourished”. These malnourished children find it difficult to access education, which is increasingly getting privatised in the state. When these students graduate from college, they find it difficult to get jobs and are forced to immigrate overseas, he added.
Mehta said like-minded individuals helped him to develop the platform. The group is also planning to set up Balwantrai Mehta Research and Training Institute to train future political leaders in civic and constitutional issues.
Danseuse Mallika Sarabhai, who accompanied Mehta to the press conference, said, “The idea is to strengthen voters and create an alternate narrative. For instance, if Gujarat has such a healthy economy and ecosystem – as claimed – why are people leaving the state in droves for foreign shores? There is a need to kindle people’s conscience.”
