The Diu police on Friday busted a diesel theft racket, involving local fishermen and possibly employees of an oil company, and arrested one person in this connection.

The police said they have seized 13 barrels (2,200 litres) of diesel and expressed the possibility of more recovery.

Preliminary investigation revealed that local fishermen used to buy fuel in the high sea from agents who would procure it from some employees of an oil company at rates cheaper than the market price. This diesel was not only cheaper but also poor in quality, police said.

“We have arrested a local fishermen. But the main suspect is believed to be still out for fishing,” said a Diu police officer.

“Fishermen have given statements on this but we are yet to get any proof,” said the police officer, adding,“The company

employees will be examined only if we find any substantial evidence against them.”
