Acting on a tip-off,Special Operation Group (SOG) police have arrested a Junagadh-based couple on Thursday for possessing prohibited drugs.
Police said heroin worth Rs 71,000 was recovered from the couple,who were booked under the provision of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act.
Sources said a team of SOG officers raided the house of Ali Mohamed Makarani (57) and his wife Jaya alias Sayara (40) in the Nichala Datar area on Wednesday night.
The police have recovered 7.150 grams of heroin packed in 42 small pouches. The couple has been booked under the provision of NDPS Act,Section 21 (29).
Investigation officer U K Makwana said: The accused will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Thursday evening. The police will seek a 10-day remand of the accused.
He added that earlier,prime accused Makarani was arrested for a similar offence and was convicted by court. Recently,he was released from jail after completing his punishment.
Unlawful activities,particularly sale of prohibited drugs,are on a rise especially in the outskirts of the city. Last year,large stocks of hemp and opium worth Rs one crore was recovered from a house in the Girnar Gate area.
The prime accused in the racket,identified as Ashwin Kathi,is still at large.
