CEPT UNIVERSITY will establish an additive manufacturing and 3D concrete printing workshop on its campus with the help of Chennai-based deep-tech startup Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions, with which it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday.

A release issued by the university said that as per the accord, Tvasta would provide the robotic arm that will be capable of printing complex concrete forms and place the University among the few premier institutions equipped with such an advanced research infrastructure. This workshop will be developed over the coming months and will support teaching studios, applied research projects, and prototype development targeting real construction challenges.

The initiative is led by Prof Jinal Shah, Programme Chair of the Masters in Computational Design and Fabrication (MCDF), and Kalyan Vaidyanathan, Chief Technology Officer (Construction) at Tvasta. The collaboration aims to increase the scope of 3D-printed concrete through research into printed façades, integrated structural systems, embedded electrical conduits, and environmentally responsive forms. Other key areas of interest will be components that can be printed off-site and assembled in challenging terrains where traditional construction is impossible, the statement said.

Bringing advanced additive manufacturing into the academic ecosystem at CEPT will help students “prototype, experiment and rethink how India conceives and constructs its buildings” deputy Provost Prof Chirayu Bhatt was quoted as saying. Prof Shah added that the collaboration strengthens rapid prototyping, material-driven design and sustainable construction approaches for students.

The company, which pioneered 3D-printed structures in India, will also offer DFAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) studio courses in collaboration with CEPT, where students can build their designs on robotic printing systems.

The new on-campus setup will deepen research, experimentation, and innovation with students already exposed to the facilities in Chennai and Bhiwandi.

The partnership brings together CEPT’s academic leadership in the built environment and Tvasta’s trailblazing work in automated concrete construction to create a national-level platform for research, teaching, and innovation, the release added.
