The Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Saturday arrested builder Munaf Bata, who had been on the run after an unauthorised building collapsed at Saudagar ni Pol in Kalupur area of the city on January 28,killing five people.

Bata was arrested from Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district.

“Munaf was arrested around 3.30 pm. He had been absconding for the last several days and was declared an accused in the case,” said DCP Crime Himanshu Shukla.

Munaf’s two brothers,Salim and Hanif Bata, have already been arrested in the same case.

The police said they would find out the place where Batas took refuge after collapse, their financial dealings, bank accounts, phone records and other details required in the case.

The Crime Branch had earlier arrested Mehboob Beig, who had a partnership of nearly 40 per cent with the Batas in the construction of the building. Beig’s henchman Salim Chandkhan Pathan was arrested on Friday.

Pathan has been working under Beig for the last several years reportedly for a fixed percentage of profit that Beig fetches by grabbing projects and land from local builders.
