A complaint of negligence has been registered against 10 persons,including builders and architects,in connection with Tuesday’s building collapse incident in Surat. All those named in the complaint are reportedly absconding.
We sent our teams to catch the accused named in the complaint,but they were found absconding. We have registered a complaint of negligence against the builders and architects, said Mahidharpura police inspector B S Mori.
According to reports,the footing work of an upcoming market on the Pipra Street in Mahidharpura area was under progress. Sources said the builders and architects had planned to make parking facilities on the ground floor and basement of the market,for which digging work was done deep into the ground.
Due to the deep-digging work,the neighbouring buildings had developed cracks in the beams and walls in Devkrupa Chambers (four-storey building) which consists of offices of diamond merchants,sources said.
After learning about the cracks,the diamond merchants vacated the building with all belongings on Tuesday morning. In the afternoon,the Devkrupa building started collapsing and within minutes the entire structure turned into debris.
Central Zone chief Mohan Daruwala,after supervising the entire scene,registered a complaint against 10 persons. The municipal corporation had also suspended license of the architects identified as architect Paresh Lad and Saiyed Salim.
SMC Central Zone chief Mohan Daruwala said,We have also sought help from the technical experts of our organisation and asked to prepare a report to find out the exact reason for the collapse of Devkrupa building. On the bases of preliminary investigations,we have registered a police complaint against builders and architects of the upcoming market.
