Co-op scam: Accused in police remand
The Chief Metropolitan Court in Ahmedabad has sent an accused in the Rs 107-crore co-operative bank scam on five days of police remand. The scam relates to Surat-based Gujarat Industrial Co-operative Bank and the accused has been identified as Mukesh Ganvani from Surat.
Ganvani was arrested by the Economic Offence Wing of the State CID (Crime),which had registered a case against 65 persons,including some senior office-bearers of the bank who had allegedly made a payment of Rs 107 crore to various account holders without any security under various heads.
Ashok Raval,who was the the regional manager of the bank when the scam took place,is at large.
3 electrocuted near Pipavav port
Amreli: Three persons were electrocuted when they were trying to repair an overhead electric line near the gate of the Pipavav Port in Rajula taluka on Friday,police said. The incident took place when the trio was trying to repair the electricity line while it was raining heavily. They were identified as Kasam Sandhi (30),Safaraz Bhismilla (25) and Munaf Fakir (22). According to the police,the metal ladder on which they were standing accidentally touched the live overhead wire. The workers were taken to Rajula government hospital,where they were declared dead on arrival. A complaint has been registered and further investigation are on.
Cong to protest water supply cut in Rajkot
Rajkot: The City Congress unit will protest against Rajkot Municipal Corporations (RMCs) decision to impose water cut from July 12. Civic officials have slapped water cut notice from every third day from July 12,as the main reservoirs in the city are almost dry. City president Jasvantsinh Bhatti said the RMC has done nothing to bring water from Narmada. The party is now planning to gherao the Mayor and other officials. Meanwhile,Mayor Sandhya Vyas said the RMC is trying to bring water from Mahi-Pariej to maintain uniform water distribution.
Two children killed in mishap in Vadodara
Vadodara: Two children of the same family were killed and three others injured when a truck overturned at Padmala village on the outskirts of the city on Friday,police said. The incident took place on NH-8 when the driver lost control and turned turtle. The truck was on its way to Morbi from Chhotaudepur.

State to provide Swarnim Seva Township for rural poor
Ahmedabad: The state government announced that it will provide houses with all civic infrastructure to homeless in rural areas under its new Swarnim Seva Township scheme for free. While addressing a gathering at a Garib Kalyan Mela in Dholka town,Chief Minister Narendra Modi said people living below the poverty line and those who do not have a house will be benefitted by the scheme. The state had earlier organised 50 Garib Kalyan Melas,and now it is planning to organise another 250 to provide financial aid to the poor.
The state government is committed to empower the poor and free them from the shackles of debt by eliminating the middlemen, Modi said at the rally.
Sources said assistance worth Rs.1.59-crore were disbursed to 5,303 beneficiaries at Dholka on Friday. Modi said 300 more talukas and city wards will be covered in the six rounds of Garib Kalyan Mela during this fiscal.
