Borewell water in Citizen Nagar not potable: study

A Study report prepared by the students of Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has found the bore well water at Citizen Nagar unfit for drinking.

A Study report prepared by the students of Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has found the bore well water at Citizen Nagar unfit for drinking.

The research was part of the Socio-Cultural Environment of Business course based on those displaced by the riots. The report has been submitted to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

Navdeep Mathur, professor at the institute who handles the course, said: “The study was taken up at the spot after several complaints about the water condition in the area were received. The students and faculty members conducted a test on water samples collected from the spot. The test was conducted at CC Patel Environmental Testing Laboratory (certified by the Gujarat Society of Civil Engineers and Architects).”

The results of the test stated: “The presence of salts and metals is extremely high and the total dissolved solids are above the acceptable limit. The presence of chloride, sulphate and magnesium is also extremely high. The alkalinity is more than twice the permissible limits.” Quoting the test report,Mathur said: “The analysis of the samples shows that the water is not found to be potable.”

The study threw light on the constant complaints of the people about polluted water in the area, where the residents depend on borewells.

Mathur added: “Citizen Nagar is one of the rehabilitation pockets that was neglected for a very long time. The locality is in a miserable shape and requires immediate government attention. The water samples testified that the people who have been complaining about skin ailments and waterborne diseases have a strong cause to worry. The availability of municipal water would be an ideal solution to all their woes”.

Citizen Nagar in the industrial belt of Ahmedabad falls outside the municipal limits, due to which, the residents neither have access to municipal water nor get supply of clean water from bore wells. The underground discharge of industrial waste leaves little chance for the residents to get clean waters.
