BJP’s Nilesh Rathod is new Vadodara mayor

Rathod was elected after Keyur Rokadia resigned from the post following his election as the MLA of the Sayajigunj Assembly constituency.

The BJP-run Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in Gujarat Friday elected Nilesh Rathod as its new mayor. Rathod, 48, is a three-term corporator from ward 17 of the city. Rathod was elected after Keyur Rokadia resigned from the post following his election as the MLA of the Sayajigunj Assembly constituency.

The General Board of the VMC met on Friday to accept Rokadia’s resignation and elect a new Mayor. Rathod will hold the post for a period of six months. Thereafter, the VMC will elect a woman mayor for the remaining two-and-a-half years of the current term.

The BJP issued a mandate in the name of Rathod, a resident of the Tarsali area of the city. Rathod has previously been the leader of the ruling party in the VMC. He was currently a standing committee member in the corporation. As soon as he was elected the Mayor, Rathod resigned from the standing committee.

Soon after his election, workers in his ward number 17 broke into celebrations, bursting crackers and distributing sweets. Rathod who has completed his HSC from the Gujarat Board is an active member of the party.

Rokadia, on the other hand, will continue to hold the post of a municipal corporator along with his current term as the MLA of Sayajigunj.
