A group of BJP workers from Gujarat’s various municipal corporations and other elected representatives have been given campaign assignments to push for a BJP win, especially in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. A BJP leader said that 5,000 elected representatives, from panchayat to Parliament levels, had been sent to Rajasthan alone.

From Rajkot, 40 persons, including 20 corporators led by city BJP president Bhikha Vasoya, have been assigned Udaipur city Assembly constituency from where former Rajasthan Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria is contesting. The unit is also in charge of Udaipur rural constituency from where Fulchand Meena is in the fray.

“This is for the third time that I’m campaigning for Rajasthan Assembly elections. The main responsibility of my unit is to win back disgruntled local leaders and party workers after ticket distribution. We are also organising local BJP workers,” said Vasoya.

Vasoya added that a dinner party was on the itinerary for the Gujarati community in Udaipur on Friday or Saturday. “We have not included office-bearers in Rajkot Municipal Corporation to ensure that the routine functioning of the civic body is not affected,” said Vasoya.

The 40-member strong Jamnagar unit includes 12 corporators of Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) who will go to Nathdwara and Kumbhalgarh Assembly constituencies in Rajsamand district. “Our role is to coordinate efforts of local party workers and resolve disputes among party ranks,” Jamnagar city BJP president Hasmukh Hindocha said.

Bhavnagar unit has sent a 40-member team to tribal Dungarpur district. “We have been assigned Aspur seat, traditionally dominated by Congress. We are encouraging booth-level workers of the BJP to look at it as the rehearsal for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and work hard to ensure party’s victory in the Assembly polls,” said Bhavnagar city BJP president Chimanbhai Yadav.

“The difficulty in campaigning here is that the roads are in a very bad shape. But this allows us to give example of the good infrastructure in Gujarat,” said Bhavnagar mayor Babu Solanki, who is campaigning, along with 10 corporators.

With 30 members, including two corporators, the Junagadh team has been given the task of invigorating party workers in Chittorgarh and Badi Sadri Assembly constituencies in Chittorgarh district. “Unlike Gujarat, the party organisation seems somewhat weak here and workers lack vigour. But we are lifting their spirits by telling them of the Modi wave in the county,” said Sanjay Koradiya,Junagadh city BJP president.

Surat, which has the highest migrant population among cities in Gujarat, did not send a single corporator. It,however, sent MP C R Patil with a team to Satna and another team, led by MP Darshana Jardosh, went to Rewa in Madhya Pradesh to campaign for a week each.

Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodiya ward corporator Jatin Patel went to Pali district in Rajasthan where he had worked in Jetaran Assembly constituency where BJP is repeating eight-time candidate Surendra Gohil. Patel said Gohil had lost only in the previous election due to the rebellion in the party for this seat. “We are asked to create an atmosphere in favour of the party. Here, even Muslim voters have come out to attend our public meetings,” Patel, who accompanied AMC standing committee chairman Bhupendra Patel, said.

Vejalpur corporator Dilip Bagariya, who is deputy chairperson of materials management committee in the AMC,said he had gone to Sojat town and its interiors for four days. “This reserved constituency comprises three mandals where we addressed five group meetings to convince local voters to vote for the BJP and gave an idea of the development model of Gujarat,” he said.

AMC BJP leader Mayur Dave on Tuesday said that the first batch had around 70 corporators going to Rajasthan while the second batch of around 80 corporators will campaign in Pali and Sirohi which comprise 20 Assembly constituencies of the Marwar region. “In all, some 5,000 elected representatives from Gujarat are fanning out in Rajasthan,” he said.

Dave assured that no public work would be disturbed, stalled or delayed because of so many corporators going out together. He said,“For the 2012 Assembly elections,BJP workers had come here to campaign in large numbers. Now,it is our turn to pay back,” he said.
