Bhavnagar varsity e-mails question paper to exam centres to cut costs

With its 80 colleges,BU leads the way by cutting paper work in exam system.

On Friday, examination papers for the Post Graduation Diploma in Computer Application were sent to all 80 colleges affiliated to Bhavnagar University in the district from the headquarters with a click of mouse, about 30 minutes before the exam began.

With this, the university became the first in Gujarat to make use of email facility in examination system, thus adopting a system that would help it save about Rs 35 lakh per semester (6 months) which it had to otherwise spend on physical transportation of question papers to all centres and paying transport allowances to employees, besides the cost of printing bundles of question papers.

“Email is such a common facility now. It’s just that we are still following age-old methods when it comes to administrative works related to education. The need of the hour is to break the mould,” said Bhavnagar University Vice-Chancellor Dr D Korat.

While the examination papers are sent only 30 minutes to an hour prior to the scheduled time, the concerned authority at the centre is given a password for access to the email. The receiver then takes out required number of prints at the centre.

“The idea is to save money otherwise spent on fuel and paper. Besides,it also saves time. It’s also a greener way to do without paper and fuel,” Korat said.

Recently, when Korat was appointed the V-C,he had promised students there would be no fee hikes at least for the next three years. To keep his promise,he and his office have come up with this plan to cut costs.

“Use of email will help us save Rs 70 lakh per year. Other methods will also be introduced to boost savings so that BU does not have to hike fees,” the V-C said.
