College education in the state is to undergo major change as authorities are planning to introduce semester, grading and choice-based credit systems in bachelor’s programmes for science, commerce and arts.

A committee comprising M S University (MSU) Vice Chancellor Professor Ramesh Goyal, former Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University A U Patel,South Gujarat University’s former Vice Chancellor R G Kothari and former MSU Vice Chancellor Hitanshu Vyas has been formed to look into the recommendation made by University Grants Commission (UGC).

The committee is also visiting other states such as Tamil Nadu, where this pattern has already been implemented. The committee will also carry out a survey to find out industrialists view on the matter.

A U Patel said,“According to UGC policy, there will be six semesters (in a bachelor programme),two in each year. We have recently visited Tamil Nadu where this pattern has been already implemented.”

Patel,“Under this UGC pattern, there will be an internal and external exam.” While internal tests will be held regularly and more periodically, the final external exam will be the university exams taken at the end of the year,he said.

He said each semester will include several tests and their marks will be counted in the final result.

He added,“Under the new system, there will be 140 credit courses including group discussion, other extra curricular activities as well as the time spent by a student in the library.”

“One grade will be given for 30 hours of study. The study hours will be counted on a daily basis by a librarian with the help of swipe cards,” he said.
