Attack on ashram was a plot to kill me: Patkar

Activist Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan appeared before a metropolitan court on Thursday in an 11-year-old case,in which she had been attacked during a peace meeting at Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad on March 7,2002,in the aftermath of post Godhra riots.

She was deposed before magistrate A S Desai. She told the court that the assault on her was part of a conspiracy to kill her. She alleged that her hair was pulled,she was kicked at and hit on her shoulder and neck by a mob of about 200 men. During the proceeding,she identified four persons who allegedly assaulted her,including former mayor of Ahmedabad Amit Shah,BJP leader Amit Thaker,V K Saxena and Rohit Patel.

As per her complaint,Patkar had stated that a peace meeting had been called to condemn the riots in which there were several activists and journalists,among others. She had alleged that a mob of BJP supporters had attacked the gathering in the presence of police. Patkar also submitted a DVD to the court containing footage of the attack on the meeting in which she is seen as being beaten up. Further proceeding has been scheduled to be held on October 7.
