Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday asked real-estate developers in Ahmedabad to run a year-long campaign where at least 25 tree saplings are planted in each of their real-estate projects.

Shah, after inaugurating a garden developed by CREDAI, a body of real-estate developers, said the move will help turn Ahmedabad into a “green” city. He had earlier planted a “Rudraksha” tree in the newly-inaugurated garden.

“Last year among the tree saplings planted, 5.42 lakh saplings survived in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency,” Shah said.

“If every CREDAI member takes an initiative to plant 25 new trees in every project initiated by them, then it will help make Ahmedabad green,” Shah said, asking real-estate developers to contribute to the society by planting trees.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also present on the occasion.

The Indian Express had last year reported that over 17,400 fully grown trees were felled in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts in 2020 and 2021. Of these, 14,272 trees were chopped in Gandhinagar, while an additional 3,160 trees were cut in Ahmedabad.
