The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Sunday began allotting housing units to the urban poor under various schemes of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

This comes a week after Congress MP Kunvarji Bavalia threatened to go on a fast unto death if the beneficiaries were not allotted the houses by Monday.

Last Monday,Bavalia had submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Dr Dinesh Brahmbhatt, demanding that the allotment process, which has been stalled for a year, should be resumed immediately or he would go on a fast on to death from Monday.

And as his deadline neared,RMC standing committee chairman Narendra Solani completed the formalities to start the allotment process on Saturday, officials said. The exercise will be carried out in two phases, covering 4,976 urban poor beneficiaries.

These 2BHK units were completed over a year ago and Chief Minister Narendra Modi had even announced about the same during two Garib Kalyan Melas in August 2010. Under the scheme, the beneficiaries can claim their respective units by paying Rs 5,000 as down payment followed by Rs 400 installments for the next 100 months.

In another development, the standing committee has passed a resolution to consider those who have lost houses in demolition drives as beneficiaries.
