A three-storeyed building built by Gujarat Housing Board on Tithal road in Valsad collapsed on Sunday night. No casualties were reported since the nine families of 22 people living there had vacated the premises 10 minutes earlier after hearing the wall cracking.

Fire Brigade officers and the Valsad police rushed to the spot and removed the debris.

Sources said due to the poor quality of construction, two more blocks constructed by GHB still remain unoccupied. Block no. 9,which collapsed was built 21 years ago.

Surekha Nayka, who occupies flat no 193,said she heard the cracking sound on a slab and some portion fall on the floor. She along with her family members shouted and vacated the flat. Others too had similar experience. Once out, just as they were discussing their next course of action, the apartment block collapsed. All nine families have been shifted to nearby places .

Nita Thakker, who lived in flat no 211,said,“We have made complaints about poor construction to the Gujarat Housing Board regularly but they did nothing.”
