(Express File Photo)Porbandar MP Ramesh Dhaduk on Sunday inaugurated a special neonatal care unit (SNCU) at the state-run Cottage Hospital in Rajkot’s Upleta town. This is the second government hospital in Rajkot to get an SNCU as part of the district administration’s initiative. The SNCU in the Cottage Hospital has been set up at the cost of Rs 48.16 lakh, said authorities. The unit with 10 beds has all modern equipment for treating neonatal patients, officials added. These include LED phototherapy equipment for treating neonatal jaundice, a modern bubble CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine for treating premature infants, an oxygen concentrator, and a mobile X-ray among other facilities.
“The unit will make possible treatment of sepsis, hypothermia, hypoglycemia as well as take care of infants delivered preterm, those with low birthweight, seizure, and jaundice,” an official release said.
Addressing a public meeting after inaugurating the SNCU, the MP said: “Thanks to this SNCU, children of three talukas of this region will get treatment locally.”
Rajkot District Collector Prabhav Joshi, who took the initiative to set up the SNCU at government hospitals in Gondal and Upleta, said that the unit has been set up with the help of donors as well as by utilising funds of various government schemes.
“For lack of neonatal care facilities, local doctors in Upleta so far used to refer patients to Junagadh. From there, many patients are eventually referred to Rajkot. The SNCU in Cottage Hospital will address this gap. The new unit will provide necessary treatment to newborns and in case of serious health conditions requiring tertiary care, it will at least stabilise patients and refer them to Rajkot. Thus, parents won’t be required to go to Junagadh and then to Rajkot,” the District Collector told The Indian Express. The state t is already in the process of upgrading Cottage Hospital and a new hospital building is under construction
