Delhi HC gives relief to coal block bidders on technical grounds

The court has agreed to hear the cases further on Wednesday.

Providing major relief to several companies bidding for coal blocks, the Delhi High Court on Friday addressed a bunch of petitions filed by them challenging various aspects of the auction process.

Sarda Energy & Minerals Ltd, Usha Martin, Sesa Sterlite and Monnet Ispat were granted relief by the High Court bench of Justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva by allowing them to participate in the bidding process for coal blocks in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.

“We are trying to save the auction,” commented the court. The court has agreed to hear the cases further on Wednesday, after the initial price offers for the blocks are opened on Monday.

Meanwhile, a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw has issued notice to the Centre on a plea filed by Jindal Steel and Power Ltd and Jindal Power Ltd challenging the 2014 Coal Ordinance provisions regarding determination of compensation payable to previous allottees towards infrastructure and land value of the blocks.
