Renault in India has stalled the production of its Pulse hatchback and Scala sedan citing low demands of these models in the country. The production has been shut temporarily as Renault plans to introduce upgrades/face-lift for these models in the coming time.
The sales of the the Renault Scala sedan have been lethargic, and as per SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), Renault last produced 183 units of Scala in May 2014. The production of the hatchback, Renault Pulse, was halted in October 2014 with just 59 units rolling out of Renault’s production facility in India. The fact that no Scala model has been produced in last 8 months, and that of Pulse in last 4 months, makes it evident that Renault has a piling stock of these cars at its manufacturing plant as well as at dealer’s end. As a consequence, Renault would first want to clear the remaining stock before it restarts the production of these models.
Despite low sales for the Scala and Pulse models, Renault is in no mood to discontinue these cars just as yet. The company will possibly reincarnate the Scala and Pulse in near future so as to improve the sales for both the cars in India. Once the revamped versions are introduced, expect Renault to continue the production of the Scala and Pulse back again.

The Renault Scala and Pulse are rebadged versions of the Nissan Sunny and Micra, respectively. All these cars are produced at the Renault-Nissan’s joint manufacturing facility in Chennai. While Renault has a total of 5 cars, namely, Pulse, Scala, Fluence, Duster and Koleos on offer in India, a majority of its sales are driven by the Renault Duster alone. The Duster sells at an average of 3,000 units per month. In comparison, between April and January 2014, sales for the Pulse dropped by over 53 per cent as Renault only managed to sell 1,646 units of the hatchback. Similarly, the Scala sedan saw a drop of 74 per cent in its sales during the same period.
In the last few months, Renault offered lucrative offers and discounts on the Scala and Pulse, but all its efforts were to no avail. The sales were further hit when Renault recalled 646 units of the Pulse and Scala for a faulty airbag in the beginning of the year 2015. The recall covered models of these cars manufactured between September 2011 and July 2012. That said, the recall was part of the international airbag recall made by car makers like Honda, Toyota etc., across the world due to a manufacturing defect associated with units sourced from Japanese airbag manufacturer, Takata. However, it did dent the reputation of the brand in the eye of Indian customers.
