Pralhad Joshi, who won for the fifth time in a row from Dharwad Loksabha Constituency, assumed office as the union minister of cabinet rank with the portfolios of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy in June 2024 after Narendra Modi-led NDA formed government for the third consecutive term.
Pralhad Joshi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is particularly known for his contributions in the state of Karnataka. Born on November 27, 1962, in Vijayapura, Karnataka, Joshi's political journey is marked by his rise through the ranks of the BJP.
Joshi's foray into politics began at a young age, influenced by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the BJP. His early involvement with the RSS laid the foundation for his political views and his dedication to public service. He quickly rose through the ranks of the BJP's youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, where he honed his organizational and leadership skills.
In 1996, Pralhad Joshi made his debut in electoral politics when he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Dharwad constituency. His work as a legislator was well-received, particularly for his focus on local issues and his accessibility to the constituents. His dedication to addressing the concerns of his constituency solidified his position as a significant political figure in Karnataka.
Joshi's national political career took a leap forward when he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004 from the Dharwad North constituency. He was subsequently re-elected in 2009, 2014, and 2019, each time with an increased margin, underscoring his popularity and effectiveness as a Member of Parliament. In the Lok Sabha, Joshi has been noted for his active participation in debates and his focus on issues related to development, infrastructure, and education.
In 2019, following the BJP's victory in the general elections, Pralhad Joshi was appointed as the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet. His tenure in these ministries has been marked by several key initiatives aimed at reforming and streamlining operations in the coal and mining sectors, as well as enhancing the efficiency of parliamentary proceedings.
