ABOUT Devika Rani

Devika Rani: Pioneer of Indian Cinema Devika Rani Chaudhuri (1908-1994), a name synonymous with the golden age of Hindi cinema, remains a pivotal figure in Indian film history. Her career, spanning the 1930s and 1940s, saw her rise to become the "First Lady of Indian Cinema," a title reflecting her significant contribution to the industry's development. Born into a wealthy Anglo-Indian family, Rani's journey began with a move to England at age nine. Her life took a decisive turn upon meeting film producer Himanshu Rai in 1928, marrying him the following year. Their collaboration led to significant advancements in Indian filmmaking. They undertook training at Germany's UFA Studios, bringing back innovative techniques. Their bilingual film Karma (1933), while unsuccessful in India, garnered international attention. The establishment of Bombay Talkies, a production studio co-founded by Rai and others, marked a new era. Rani starred in several successful films produced by the studio, notably alongside Ashok Kumar, forming a popular on-screen pairing. Following Rai's death in 1940, Rani took the helm of Bombay Talkies, continuing production albeit with mixed commercial success. She retired from acting in 1945, marrying the painter Svetoslav Roerich, and lived a private life until her death. Rani's legacy extends beyond her on-screen roles. She received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (1958), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1969), the first recipient of this prestigious honour, and the Soviet Land Nehru Award (1990). Her unconventional personality and pioneering contributions solidified her iconic status in Indian cinema.
