In 1996, Priyadarshini Mattoo was raped and killed by her college senior, Santosh Kumar Singh. He was later sentenced to life in prison. Nearly three decades later, on July 1, the Delhi High Court directed the Sentence Review Board to consider afresh Singh’s case for premature release.

The convict, Vishva Bandhu, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Additional Sessions Judge Vijeta Singh Rawat in a sentencing order dated July 16. He was arrested in this case in 2014 for repeatedly raping two minors aged about 7 and 9 years old.

Police said the accused was identified using CCTV footage and an initial probe revealed that he allegedly stabbed the victim 25 times to ensure his crime was never detected.

Manoj and Pradeep were convicted under Sections 376 (D), 376 (2) (i), 363, 342, 201, 307 and 34 of the IPC and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. The offences carry a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. The court fixed January 30 for arguments on quantum of sentence.

Additional Sessions Judge, Special Fast Track Court, Harish Dhudani also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the convict, directing that the amount be paid to the victim.
