Amar Malkiat Singh, a prominent figure in Indian politics, is a man of many roles. Born in Boparai Kalan, Ludhiana, Punjab, Singh’s journey from a physician to a bureaucrat and finally to a Member of Parliament (MP) is a testament to his dedication and commitment to public service.
Singh’s early life and education laid the groundwork for his diverse career. He completed his M.A. in Economics and MBBS from Barkhatullah University and Amritsar Medical College, Punjab. This solid academic background set the stage for his future endeavours.
Singh’s bureaucratic career is marked by significant contributions at various levels of government. He served as the Principal Secretary/Secretary for the Government of Madhya Pradesh from 1997 to 2004 and later as Joint Secretary at the central government from 2004 to 2010.
During his tenure as Joint Secretary, Singh was instrumental in the creation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in 2004-05. He also prepared a concept paper for rural youths' Skill Development and Placement in the Private Sector.
Singh’s leadership acumen was further showcased when he served as the Executive Director and later as the Chairman & Managing Director of the Food Corporation of India from 2010 to 2012. Under his stewardship, the corporation implemented the National Food Security Act, 2003.
Singh’s political journey began with the Indian National Congress in 2014. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. In the 2019 general elections, Singh was elected as the MP for the Fatehgarh Sahib constituency.
