Turkish Military Attempts Coup: World leaders condemn attack, urge people to support government

Turkey's president remained defiant and called on people to take to the streets to show support for his embattled government.

Members of Turkey’s armed forces said they had taken control of the country Friday as explosions, gunfire and a reported air battle between loyalist forces and coup supporters erupted in the capital.

Turkey’s president remained defiant and called on people to take to the streets to show support for his embattled government.

A few hours earlier, the Turkish Prime Minister said a group within Turkey’s military has engaged in what appeared to be an attempted coup.

Leaders from across the world have condemned the coup and urged people to support the democratically elected government:

Vikas Swarup, Official Spokesperson MEA, tweeted out help numbers.

German Government spokesman: “The democratic order in Turkey must be respected, all must be done to protect lives.”

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry: “The state of Qatar expressed its strong denunciation and condemnation of the military coup attempt, lawlessness, and violation of the constitutional legitimacy in the Republic of Turkey”

In a statement to news agency QNA, Qatar also condemned attempt and said it supported legal measures taken by the Turkish government to maintain stability in the country.

So far 43 people have been killed in Ankara while Istanbul witnessed more fatalities.
