Every time the F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song by Rembrandts has gone off on the TV, we have clutched our hearts and sang along merrily. The song has defined our friendships and has given us beautiful memories of our all-time favourite friends — Monica, Ross, Rachel, Joey, Phoebe and Chandler. Yes, the song will always be special. Which is why, this Indian classical spin on “I’ll be there for you,” will not disappoint you. Mahesh Raghavan, a music composer from the University of Edinburgh who is known for making mesmerising versions of popular tracks, has come up with the Indian version of the song.
The makers promise that this classical take on the popular song is the ultimate Indian theme. Imagine that F.R.I.E.N.D.S is a Bollywood drama, complete with all the necessary ingredients. Then close your eyes and listen to this song. We vouch you’ll see Rachel in a wedding lehenga and Ross on a shaadi ki ghodi.
Raghavan uses electrical instruments to create music for the song and the video is nothing short of a melange — of beautiful sitar, flute, tabla and drums music emanating from the electrical instrument. Raghavan has made similar absolutely breathtaking covers in the past as well. Game of Thrones title track, Adele’s Hello are some of the tracks in his list of Indian covers.
Raghavan is a M.Sc in Digital Composition and Performance. The composer has keen interest in experimenting with technology and is highly fascinated by the possibilities of interactive and algorithmic music and mobile applications. Here is the composer’s cover of F.R.I.E.N.D.S “I’ll be there for you.”
