Prime Minister Narendra Modi has garnered close to 8.5 million followers on Twitter in the span of one year, statistics from the popular micro-blogging network showed. The figures are an indicator of the Prime Minister’s efficacy on social media websites where he is very active. PM Modi remains the third-most followed world leader on Twitter after US President Barack Obama and Pope Francis.

The Twitter statistics were released on the one-year anniversary of the Modi government in office.
At the start of his term, the PM had around 4 million followers on his personal Twitter account, which today stands at 12.6 million followers. Twitter India has said that his follower growth is equal to that of the population of Switzerland.
Till date, his most re-tweeted tweet is the one he posted after the landmark parliamentary elections last year which swept him into power. It has been re-tweeted more than 70,000 times.

Another popular tweet was the one in which he congratulated Team India for its performance in the cricket world cup.

His most re-tweeted photo tweet is the selfie that he took with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, a photograph that had broken the internet that day.

Ever since, Twitter rolled out its native video feature, the Prime Minister has been using it, more often during his foreign visits.

PM Modi, who has advocated for digitization of government departments and bridging the gap between his administration and the people, has also influenced some of the ministries to open their official Twitter accounts.
