Saavn Social: When a music streaming app dreams of becoming Twitter, Facebook

Saavn will now have verified handles of artistes and celebrities who users will be able to follow

Saavn, one of India’s most popular music streaming services, has just got itself an update that gives it a social layer. Adding features very similar to social networks like Facebook and Twitter, Saavn Social will let users follow friends’ profiles, playlists, and what they are listening to. PLus, they will also be able to follow specific playlists created by artistes and celebrities.

Speaking to IndianExpress.com, Saavn’s Global Chief Operating Officer Mahesh Narayanan said this was the app’s “biggest feature launch” ever since they launched in 2006.

“The new update comes with a bunch of social features which make consumption of music more social,” he said, adding that the app already had a basic social functionalities like sharing. “We are making it even more social by letting users tag, follow or have conversations around music.”

Saavn will now have verified handles of artistes and celebrities who users will be able to follow. Narayanan said some big names are expected to open their handles on the app soon. “Talks are on,” he added.

The new features will be free and available to all users. Rishi Malhotra, Co-Founder and CEO of Saavn, said is a release that there have been a lot of social integrations in various music products, but no service has succeeded at enabling users to have a true, intuitive conversation around music. “We are known for developing the best products in the market and we always design around the user, not around the device. We have been using Saavn Social internally for a few months and it’s changed the way we listen to and discover music,” he added.

As of March 2015, Saavn has 13 million users who get access to a catalogue of over 2 million songs.
