The iPhone 7 has only been out in September, but the world is already looking forward to the iPhone 8. Apple is believed to working on a revamped design for the iPhone 8 with a curved OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display built by Samsung, according to newly emerged rumours from Korea.

South Korean news site The Korean Herald reported that Apple will use Samsung-made curved plastic OLED panels for the iPhone 8. This is line with what previous leaks have been indicating that Apple plans to introduce an iPhone 8 with an OLED display. Noted Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo has said in the past that the new iPhone 8 will have an all-glass body as well.

The latest report revealed that Apple has placed an order for Samsung to produce curved plastic OLED displays in millions. “The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved as Apple ordered all plastic OLED — not glass — from Samsung Display. Samsung is capable of supplying a little less than 100 million units of curved OLED displays to Apple,” a source familiar with the matter told the Korean Herald.

It’s largely believed the curved, plastic OLED display will be wrapped around the edges to create a bezel-less design, like the one seen on the Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung’s flagship smartphone of 2016. The Herald also states that Apple could use ‘new sensing technology’ on its next-generation smartphone to make it different from its rivals. An earlier report on Patently Apple had highlighted how Apple was working on a patent which could allow for sensors to be fitted across the device, including the back and it will eliminate the need for buttons altogether. But this is still a patent, and is unlikely to appear on the next iPhone.

However, rumours have stated that Apple could remove the home button on the next iPhone in 2017 and replace it with a technique to scan a fingerprint anywhere on the screen. The premium smartphone is also expected to have wireless charging support as well.

For Apple, which has seen sales and revenue drop in 2016, the iPhone 8 will be a closely watched device. For now it looks like Apple will be going for a drastic design change on its upcoming flagship.
