Going by the sources in the BJP, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah took almost two months – during which they had several meetings that went on for hours – to finalise the list of new ministers to be inducted in the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

There were rumours, speculation and whispers in the corridors of power over the aspirants and possible names. But everyone admitted that even the being names considered were known only to the PM and the BJP president. Party leaders as well as Union Ministers did not hesitate to ask journalists whether they had any news on the much-awaited cabinet reshuffle.

When it finally happens on Tuesday, more than a month after the BJP-led NDA celebrated its second anniversary, both the leaders would have taken two things into consideration: the Assembly elections coming up next year and the performance of the government in the first half of its five-year term.

The Prime Minister who held a five-hour meeting with his council of ministers, reviewing the performance of each department, has taken a status report on how the money allocated in the last budgets was spent. Among the names party sources said today as possible new faces in the government, four are from Uttar Pradesh including its ally Apna Dal’s Anupriya Patel, whose performance in the Lok Sabha so far has been impressive. There was also speculation that she would merge her party into BJP.

Other names – speculation of course – from the politically crucial state are Krishna Raj (Shajahanpur), Mahendranath Pandey (Chandauli) and Raghav Rakhanpal (Saharanpur). Keeping Uttar Pradesh elections in mind, Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan is likely to be given a promotion as minister with independent charge, sources said.

Patel’s presence in the government could be significant as the party is trying to focus on OBCs in Uttar Pradesh – the BJP has appointed Keshav Prasad Maurya an OBC leader as its state chief. Another ally leader and a Dalit community representative Ramdas Athavale also could be inducted. He is a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra. With Vijay Sampla becoming party chief in Punjab, the poll bound state may get another representative in the government. So will be Assam which will get a new face to replace Sarbananda Sonowal, the newly appointed Chief Minister.
