Do ‘the right thing’: Tata to PM

Says it’s ‘misdirected’ to attack PM; but calls for reforms, growth, end to crony capitalism

Ratan Tata on Thursday urged Manmohan Singh to “do the right thing” to put India back on the growth path, even as he criticised the repeated attacks on the Prime Minister as “grossly misdirected”.

The chairman of the Tata Group described Singh as “the architect of the ’91 reforms which brought international recognition to our country” and “a warm-hearted Prime Minister (who) has led our country with great personal dignity and integrity”.

But he said that the PM “must” now break convention and restore credibility by “implementing promised reforms, removing road-blocks to growth and controlling crony capitalism”.

Tata posted his message under the title ‘Lets Do The Right Thing’ on Twitter at 3.05 am on Thursday.

“It is sad and unfortunate that over the past few months the Opposition, the media, some private citizens and even some members of the ruling party have mercilessly spoken and written disparagingly about our Prime Minister,” Tata said. “Yes,it is true that our country lost its growth momentum over the past 12 months, that investment confidence has declined, that inflation has soared and that government action has been ‘too little too late’ — but to single out and blame the Prime Minister is grossly misdirected.”

“…We should also recognize the enormous damage done by political infighting; the single-minded goal of the Opposition to topple the government; the allegations, accusations of corruption and illegal acts which have brought almost all Government action to a standstill,” Tata said.

He expressed concern over “unconfirmed sensationalized stories in the media to sell publications, the manipulation of policy by power brokers and powerful vested interest groups to meet their self-serving desire to continue protection”,and “about the policy changes which have destroyed the credibility of India”.

Now was the time,Tata said, for the PM to act. “All eyes are on him here and overseas in what could be his ‘finest hour’ in leading the country to economic prosperity once again. He will need to act boldly — to be courageous and to do ‘the right thing’. For the sake of the country we all hope he will!”
