A day after Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir’s Nowgam sector, the Army on Saturday launched search operations in the forests of Nowgam to ascertain whether any infiltration had taken place under the cover of the firing.

The Army said no fresh firing took place on the LoC since Friday night when Pakistani soldiers opened fire on Indian posts using machine guns and mortars. A Brigadier,Sanjiv Lange, sustained minor injuries along with two soldiers and a senior officer heading a battalion. The firing lasted for an hour.

Defence spokesman Naresh Vij told The Sunday Express that after the firing stopped Friday night no further violation took place in the Nowgam sector. This was the second ceasefire violation on the LoC in North Kashmir since January this year.

Sources said the search operation was launched in the forests of Nowgam and its adjacent valley that lies close to the LoC. They added that the Army patrols were looking for infiltrators near Rishwari,Toothmar Gali, and Radha and the searches were spread out over 15 to 17 km.

Though it was not clear whether any infiltration took place through Nowgam sector during the exchange of fire between the Indian and Pakistani soldiers,Army sources said they do not want to take any chances. The sources said Army on Saturday informed the police that its senior commander in the area who was visiting the forward posts got holed up inside bunkers along with other officers when the Pakistani troops opened fire towards the Indian posts.

Though the Army is also planning to take up the ceasefire violation with its Pakistani counterparts through a flag meeting,so far no flag meeting has been arranged on the LoC.
