365 Govindas hurt in dahi handi revelry,2 die on way

As many as 365 Govindas were injured during Janmashtami celebrations across the city Thursday. Two persons died on their way to the festivities.

Sanket Siddharth Mohite (19) was on his way to participate in dahi handi festivities when his bike skidded near BKC. He was heading from Wadala to Bandra-Kurla Complex to participate in a dahi-handi ceremony,said Sion hospital’s dean,Dr Avinash Supe. Mohite’s two friends suffered minor injuries. Senior inspector Chankrakant Bhosale said a case of accidental death has been registered with the BKC police station.

Prashant Satpute,a Govinda from Jai Jawan mandal,died in a bike accident in Kopri.

Among the civic hospitals,KEM Hospital in Parel alone received 70 injured Govindas. Senior assistant medical officer at KEM Dr Pravin Bangar,said,“The injuries are usually abdominal trauma,fractures,spinal injuries,head injury and sometimes,paralysis. As KEM is located close to major dahi handi processions,we receive the maximum number of patients.”

Seth VC Gandhi and Seth MA Vora,Rajawadi,received 48 injured Govindas.

A Govinda,Rohit Tawde (22),who was in the second tier in a human pyramid at Kalachowkie,fell after he slipped. He suffered head injury and was recuperating at KEM Hospital.

By late Thursday night,226 people had been discharged and few were reported to have suffered major injuries.

Nair Hospital’s trauma emergency ward in charge Dr Salman Shaikh said amongst all possible cases,paraplegia was one of the worst. “Last year,a 14-year-old boy was admitted with spinal shock. He was rendered paraplegic.” He added that patients keep coming for two days after Janmashtmi and Nair alone receives more than 40 patients every year.

Sachin Sanjay Kharat (22) and Pranav Warde (18),both from Sainagar Pimpripada,Goregaon,were admitted at RN Cooper hospital for injuries. Medical superintendent Dr Shashikant Wadekar,said,“Pravin fractured his right leg while Sachin suffered a Contused Lacerated Wound.”
