Vyapam scam: Whistleblower Anand Rai’s mother suspended ‘over Congress meet’

Suspension order stated that by participating in a political party meeting, the teacher had violated Rule 10 of Madhya Pradesh Civil Services Rules, 1966.

GOVERNMENT SCHOOL teacher Sulekha Rai, mother of Madhya Pradesh’s Vyapam scam whistleblower Anand Rai, has been suspended for attending a meeting organised by the opposition Congress in Harda, where municipal elections are due early next month.

Taking cognizance of a newspaper report that Sulekha Rai, a “sahayak adhyapak” at NSCB Government Primary School, took part in an election meeting of the Congress, district authorities suspended her with immediate effect on Sunday.

Signed by the chief municipal officer, the suspension order stated that by participating in a political party meeting, the teacher had violated Rule 10 of Madhya Pradesh Civil Services Rules, 1966.

Indore-based activist Anand Rai alleged that the suspension was against the principle of natural justice because his mother had not been served any showcause notice. He claimed that she had gone to meet Congress leader Rajkumar Patel, a family friend for more than two decades, out of courtesy because he was in town.

Rai said his mother neither gave any speech nor carried the Congress flag. “Those who sing paeans to the BJP are protected. Many government employees attend RSS meetings (and) a senior IAS officer made a presentation in a BJP meeting on agriculture,” he pointed out, adding that none of these invited any action.

Rai alleged that his mother’s suspension came in the wake of a recent statement by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan accusing RTI activists of playing dirty.
