SC stops monitoring of Vyapam cases

The Supreme Court on Thursday stopped further monitoring of the Vyapam scam after noting that investigations in most of the cases were already over.

The court, however, asked the CBI to conclude probe in the remaining 30-odd cases “as expeditiously as possible” and directed the trial courts to speed up proceedings.

There are almost 170 cases registered by the CBI in connection with the Vyapam scam, which related to illegalities in admissions in private medical and other professional degree colleges of Madhya Pradesh. The apex court had been monitoring the investigations since 2015 on a PIL filed by Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.

In Bhopal, the BJP celebrated the Supreme Court order as a vindication of its stand that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was not involved in the scam.

While ministers and party leaders burst crackers, the Congress claimed that the ruling party was deliberately misinterpreting the apex court order in its favour.

State BJP chief Nandkumar Singh Chouhan said that Digvijaya Singh had wasted the Supreme Court’s time by levelling false allegations.
