Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today responded, via Twitter, to senior BJP leader LK Advani’s remarks on the Emergency.

“Advani ji is correct in saying that emergency can’t be ruled out. Is Delhi their first experiment?,” tweeted Kejriwal in a taunt reference to the ruling BJP.

Kejriwal has been involved in a turf war with the Centre and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung over the past few weeks. Questions have emerged as to who has the authority to appoint and transfer bureaucrats in Delhi, which has not yet achieved full-fledged statehood.

Earlier, in an exclusive interview to the Indian Express, Advani said that a suspension of civil liberties similar to the 1975 Emergency could not be ruled out in future in India.

“At the present point of time, the forces that can crush democracy, notwithstanding the constitutional and legal safeguards, are stronger,” he said. “But that it cannot happen again — I will not say that. It could be that fundamental liberties are curtailed again.”

Advani, who was jailed for several months during the Emergency that was imposed by the then Indira Gandhi government, was speaking ahead of the 40th anniversary of the event.

He added that there has been no acknowledgement or apology from those responsible for the Emergency.

“The guilt lies with Indira Gandhi and her government. It was a time when 1,10,000 people were put in jail. Yet there has been no real acknowledgement or apology. I have not seen those who were responsible for the Emergency show any trace of honest realisation that it was wrong, that it should never come back,” said the BJP patriarch.
