Jessica Lall murder convict Manu Sharma weds Mumbai woman

When contacted, Sharma’s father and former Union minister Venod Sharma declined to comment on the marriage, saying, “It is his personal life.”

According to sources, Sharma has known the woman for the last 10 years but had to delay his marriage plans after his conviction by Delhi High Court in December 2006 — the ruling was upheld by Supreme Court in April 2010.

An official from Tihar jail confirmed that Sharma was out on furlough, and not parole which requires legal sanction. The official added that furlough – of usually up to two weeks – can be granted to a convict for “good conduct”. However, he did not specify the term of furlough granted to Sharma.

Earlier this year, Sharma completed his post-graduation from the Indian Institute of Human Rights after he was released on 30-day parole by Delhi High Court for appearing in the exams in January.

While in jail, Sharma has also been involved with his NGO, Siddharth Vashisht Charitable Trust, which works for the welfare of jail inmates.

On April 29, 1999, Sharma shot dead Lall after the 34-year-old refused to serve him liquor at the Tamarind Court restaurant owned by socialite Bina Ramani at Qutub Colonnade in south Delhi’s Mehrauli.

The case continued to hit the headlines long after the murder when Sharma was acquitted by a trial court in February 2006. Following a nationwide public outcry, the case was taken up by Delhi High Court through a fast track trial that ended in his conviction on murder charges.
