Public broadcaster Doordarshan would try out many firsts in its coverage of the Independence Day function when Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurls the national flag and addresses the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort.
Although DD’s coverage would commence the traditional way with Vande Mataram, the state broadcaster for the first time would be airing patriotic songs in several regional languages right at the beginning of its coverage. This, sources said, is in line with the new government’s mphasis on “regional representation” and “inclusion”.
Significantly, the 15 regional channels of Doordarshan that aired live coverage of Narendra Modi’s swearing-in as Prime Minister did so using their respective regional languages for the live commentary.
Also, Doordarshan plans to telecast a three-minute capsule on Modi’s profile just before going live to show his arrival at the Red Fort and the Guard of Honour. A capsule on former prime ministers would precede the capsule on Modi.
While profiles of former PMs have been shown in the past as well, it would be for the first time that the profile of the incumbent PM will be aired, the sources said.
On the technical side, Doordarshan’s coverage would be telecast in full high definition on the DD HD channel, which is popular in Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. The coverage would run live in Standard Definition on all DD channels.
It will also be for the first time that an the Independence Day function would be streamed live in full HD on YouTube. “We got a good response to the live streaming of PM’s swearing-in on YouTube and will be streaming the I-Day live too,” a Doordarshan official said.
Having already tried it in Republic Day and the Prime Minister’s swearing-in, DD would also simulcast the entire function in sign language on its DD News channel.
The public broadcaster would be deploying 20 cameras (14 at Red Fort), three HD OB Vans and three Digital Satellite News Gathering vans to cover the function. A team of over 100 engineers, programmers, cinematographers and commentators has been put on the job to ensure flawless delivery.
