Nearly 10 days after an unidentified body with bullet wounds was found by police in the Belagavi district of north Karnataka and a day after it was buried, the investigators are scrambling to verify whether the victim could possibly be Rudra Patil — a missing member of the Sanatan Sanstha, a hardline Hindutva outfit. The name of Patil, who was suspected to be involved in the 2009 Goa blast, had re-emerged last month as a possible suspect in the August 30 murder of rationalist M M Kalburgi in Karnataka’s Dharwad.

On October 18, the body of an unidentified man — believed to be between 25 to 30 years of age — was found in a wooded area off the Londa Main Road near Khanapur, Belagavi. The body had bullet injuries in the head and the abdomen.

“There are some similarities between the person who was found dead near Khanapur and a sketch released by the Hubli-Dharwad city police of the Kalburgi assailant. We are trying to establish the real identity,” Belagavi Superintendent of Police B R Ravikanthe Gowda said.

Police said that the body was buried on Tuesday after nobody came forward to identify it.

“We have sent the photograph of the dead person to the CID police in Karnataka which is investigating the murder of Kalburgi. The body has some similarities with the police portrait of Rudra Patil, but the dead man seems to be of a much younger age than the age attributed to Patil,” a police officer said.

CID officials too said they were attempting to verify the identity of the dead man found in Belagavi.

Police said the photograph of the dead man would be shown to Kalburgi’s wife, who is an eyewitness in the writer’s murder.
